The Rhyme Game

A few weeks ago I fell into a YouTube rabbit hole of "say the word on beat" videos — people calling out rhyming words on tempo, usually badly, always funny. I wanted to try it myself, and it turned out there wasn't really a tool for that. So I built one: The Rhyme Game.

It plays a bit like karaoke for rap. A ball bounces along the lyric track in time with the beat, rhyme pairs drop in bar by bar, and you say the rhyming word right as the ball lands. Miss the timing and the beat just moves on without you — which, to be fair, is also how a real cypher treats you.

A few things I like about it:

• The beats are real YouTube instrumentals — there's a built-in library of 150+ of them, each analyzed for its actual BPM and the exact second the drop lands. You can also paste in any YouTube beat you like.
• There's an optional mic mode that checks whether you actually said the word on the beat. It runs locally in the browser — nothing gets recorded or sent anywhere.
• Every day there's a Daily Mix (same beat and words for everyone), and you can send a friend a challenge link to dare them to beat your score. No accounts on either side.
• The rhymes come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, an open dataset of 100k+ English words. No AI involved in the rhyming — just phonetics.
